Queer The Mic (Instagram @queerthemic) is a glittery spoken word and poetry stage for Brighton. An evening of joy, humour and resistance from entirely queer and trans performers. Expect 8 handpicked open mic performers, a brilliant feature chosen from the last event and a starry headline act. Our headliner will be poetry legend Verity Spott: Alongside its job as CEO of N Power Verity Spott is the Author of the books Gideon, Click Away Close Door Say, We Will Bury You, The Mutiny Aboard the RV Felicity, Prayers - Manifestos - Bravery, Poems of Sappho (in translation), Coronelles Set 1 and 70 Sonnets. Verity's poems have been translated into French, German and Greek. Alongside their work as chief Weasel at EDF Energy Verity plays cello in the improvised tune duo Benzo Fury and the free jazz trio In Threads. With Kat Addis Verity co runs the poetic segment of Hollingdean Wednesdays and teaches poetry with the Creative Writing Programme. They're also a proud care worker, co-chair of Brighton and Hove Militant Liberal Democrats and a cadre of the glorious Lewes Maoists. Our feature is the force that is Erin James: A Brighton-based multi-disciplinary artist, with a focus on the merging of art and activism through her practices. She is the founder of the socially engaged zine Tough Cookie, as well as a poet, DJ, photographer and curator. The main themes of Erin's work tend to revolve around mental health, trauma, activism, tackling hate with joy expression and pushing for a world where we can be free to talk about "stigmatised" or "taboo" subjects. Queer The Mic is always a magical queer community happening, not to be missed! £6/£8 7.30PM 18+
