BEGINNERS
Join us on a journey of discovery from opening the box, learning key skills and repertoire, all the way to your first bends. Our workshops are led by Richard Taylor and Paul Gillings. Beginners will need a 10 hole harmonica in the key of C. These are available on purchase on the day. Full information on the event website. Our beginners schedule runs throughout Saturday morning and afternoon.
INTERMEDIATES
Our intermediate programme starts with a short bending clinic to reinforce everyone’s foundation skills. You will then be introduced to some new concepts and styles by our guest tutors Mark Hummel (USA) and Ed Hopwood (UK). Mark specialises in West Coast electric blues, while Ed specialises in blues, zydeco, old-time & bluegrass styles.
These workshops are on Saturday morning. Afternoon options include our Masterclass with Richard Taylor, our Tuning workshop with John Cook and our Guest Artists’ panel discussion.
ADVANCED
If you've been playing for many years, but want to develop new skills such as idiomatic styles, overbends, positional playing, timing and natural tone, this is the workshop for you. Your workshops are led by our guest tutors Mark Hummel (USA) and Ed Hopwood (UK).
MASTERCLASS
Join Richard Taylor for a deconstruction of William Clarke's 3rd position blues masterpiece Blowing The Family Jewels. Tabs will be provided and participants should bring a 10 hole diatonic harmonica in the key of G Major. Key skills will include 3rd position blues scale, diaphragmatic breathing, octaving and interval playing, hybrid embouchure, riff building, swing timing and mic technique.
TUNING WORKSHOP
Exclusive to Harpin’ By The Sea, John Cook and Gene Myers will be leading an introduction to their brand new tuning software. It reaches the parts other tuning systems only dream of. John is the UK’s preeminent technical guru and will also be happy to answer all your questions on maintenance and modifications for the diatonic harmonica.
