The Brighton Beach Boys recreate the album Station to Station (1976). Sandwiched between Young Americans and the Berlin Trilogy, this is arguably David Bowie’s finest album.
In the winter of 1975-76, at a time when David Bowie was reportedly surviving on a diet of peppers, milk, and cocaine, he created what many consider his most pivotal album. "Station to Station" emerged as a masterwork of transition, bridging his American soul period with his forthcoming experimental Berlin phase. The album's significance lies not just in its musical innovation, but in its role as a cultural turning point in popular music.
Recorded as a vehicle for The Thin White Duke persona, the album draws on his years in the US and the developing sounds of electronic music. Featuring Golden Years, Stay and Wild is the Wind, the album is a sharp jab of sound, shaping the Berlin Trilogy that followed and much of the music of the 1980s.
The Thin White Duke, Bowie's last great character, embodied the album's cold, mechanical precision. This persona, with his aristocratic dress and detached demeanour, reflected the album's stark contrasts between European art rock and American funk. The production captured this duality perfectly – glacial synthesisers merged with warm R&B rhythms, creating a sound that was simultaneously futuristic and deeply rooted in soul music.
This will be a feast for any fans of the great man.
Featuring Glen Richardson, Adrian Marshall, Stephen Wrigley and Charlotte Glasson.
