John Turville 8pm £7

The
John Turville trio are becoming increasingly recognized as one of the
leading contemporary jazz trios in the UK. Recent winners of the coveted
‘Promoter’s Choice’ award, they received featured slots last year at
the London, Scarborough and Manchester Jazz festivals last year and will
perform tracks from their new album ‘Midas’ tonight as part of their
national tour. With influences ranging from South Indian classical music,
to tango, contemporary jazz and classical music, the trio has a fresh and
approachable sound that is both modern and deeply lyrical.
"I was struck by the musicality of the playing, the sensitivity and
empathy in the ensemble and the lyricism and development… There isn't a
moment when anything is overplayed [and] they play with a maturity well
beyond their years" Tim Whitehead
“Excellent jazz pianist whose subtle ebb and flow echoes [the great]
John Taylor” - The Guardian |

Gilad Atzmon
is an Israeli-born British jazz musician, and is known as an author and
activist who is critical of both Zionism and Judaism. His album Exile
was BBC jazz album of the year in 2003, and he has been described as
"one of London's finest saxophonists". Playing over
100 dates a year, he has been called "surely the hardest-gigging
man in British jazz". His albums, of which he has recorded nine
to date, often explore political themes and the music of the Middle East.
Multi-talented, he has also written two novels, which have been translated
into over 20 languages. |

Sunday 4th April Sue
Richardson 8:00 £8

Sue Richardson is an unusual combination of jazz vocalist and trumpet player, one of just a few female singer/trumpet players
in the world. Her swinging trumpet contrasts wonderfully with her smooth vocals. She
has performed for an amazing variety of events around the world from The Last Night Of The Proms to a rap CD.
You can even hear her recorded version of The Girl From Ipanema being played in Rio in the famous bar where the song was written. In recent years Sue has gigged at venues including the
Royal Albert Hall, the Purcell Room, 606 Jazz Club, Birmingham Jazz
Festival. Sue was a finalist at the Marion Montgomery Jazz Diva Awards.
She plays Eclipse Trumpets exclusively. Sue plays on Ian Shaw's Sad Sweet

Bobby Wellins 8:00 Free
|
A welcome return to Bobby
Wellins. Bobby is possibly best known for his collaboration with
Stan Tracey on the seminal 1965 British jazz album Under
Milk Wood.
He was a member of Buddy Featherstonhaugh's
quintet in the late 1950s, together with Kenny Wheeler and around that
time also joined drummer Tony Crombie's Jazz Inc., where he first met up
with pianist Tracey, and going on to join Tracey's quartet in the early
1960s.
In the mid-seventies he led his own quartet,
as well as a quintet with fellow sax player Don Weller. In the 1980s he
formed a band with guitarist Jim Mullen, and in the 90s led a quartet
which featured, among others, John Critchinson (piano), Andy Cleyndert
(bass), Martin Drew (drums).
Playing at the Brunswick with the Terry
Seabrook Trio.

Sunday 13th June Ian Shaw
8pm £12
 |
"Best Jazz
Vocalist" at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2007 and 2004, Ian Shaw has
already amassed a number of highly acclaimed albums and is a popular
performer both in the UK and the US. An incredibly colourful character, he
has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the
world's finest male jazz vocalists. When Ian first played The
Brunswick, a power cut blacked out half of Hove. All he needed were
some candles, a piano and his wonderful voice to deliver one of the best
concerts we have had.

Sunday 1st AugustNette
Robinson's Little Big Band 8:00 £7
 |
The
Little Big Band Plays is a homage to and celebration
of big band legends Count Basie and Duke Ellington. But
there’s a twist. Despite the album being a salute to two pianists,
Nette Robinson’s outfit includes no piano. In fact there are no
chordal instruments to be found in the Little Big Band. The result:
a great sense of space and musical freedom.
Nette
Robinson (Voice/Arranger), Tony
Woods (Saxes/Flute/Alto Clarinet), Adrian
Fry (Trombone), Will Hyland (Double
Bass), Chris Nickolls (Drums) |
